The No. 5-ranked Sooners improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in conference play last week, when they defeated No. 15 Texas 34-27 in Dallas in the Red River Showdown.

Oklahoma shares the Big 12 lead with Baylor, who is also 6-0, and is one of only seven undefeated Power 5 schools in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll.

The win over the Longhorns was a major statement of intent—and not just because it was Oklahoma’s first win of the season against a ranked team.

The Sooners defense dominated the Texas offensive line, sacking quarterback Sam Ehlinger nine times and forcing 15 tackles for a loss.

For all its defensive pressure, however, Oklahoma failed to record a turnover, which is something coach Lincoln Riley will undoubtedly want to address against the Mountaineers on Saturday.

The Sooners’ job could be made easier as West Virginia, who is 3-3 and has lost two of its three Big 12 games so far this season, could be without quarterback Austin Kendall.

Kendall spent three seasons at Oklahoma behind Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, before transferring to West Virginia in the offseason.

Through six games with the Mountaineers—the same amount of games in his three seasons in Oklahoma combined—he has thrown for 1,247 yards, nine touchdown passes and seven interceptions, while completing 66 percent of his passes.

West Virginia coach Neil Brown, however, indicated a decision on Kendall’s fitness will be made before Saturday, but there is a chance he may miss his homecoming.

Oklahoma has no such issues on the offensive side of the ball, where Jalen Hurts and CeeDee Lamb continue to torch defenses.

Hurts completed 16 of 28 passes for 235 passing yards and three touchdown passes in the win over the Longhorns, adding 131 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Lamb, meanwhile, caught all three touchdown passes and added another seven receptions for a combined 171 yards.

Oklahoma averages 621.7 yards per game, 60 more than the closest team. With 50.2 points per game it ranks third in the nation in terms of points scored, behind only LSU and Alabama.

Hurts, however, insisted there was still room for improvement.

“We’re going to learn from our mistakes,” he said in his post-game press conference last week. “We still haven’t played a complete game. We’ve still got steps to take, and we’re going to get better.”

That is a scary prospect for the rest of college football.
